Sustainable Banking Triodos Bank. Branch monitoring

Triodos Bank is an independent European bank founded in 1980. Since its beginning, it has promoted ethical and sustainable banking: investing only in projects that promote development with ethical criteria; social initiatives, environmental projects and cultural projects.

In Spain they have 21 offices, all of them designed with the aim of reflecting the bank’s values in the branch: branches with ecological materials, diffuse lighting, energy-efficient air conditioning…

Within the framework of the 2014-2017 energy efficiency plan, the entity identified the availability of real data on consumption and under-consumption as an essential factor for energy saving. For this reason it contacted Satel Spain to provide it with an energy efficiency solution.

Triodos Bank's office design concept: sustainable, efficient, with natural materials and FSC certified wood.

PROJECT TYPE

Internal plan of the banking entity for the improvement of Energy Efficiency 2014-2017.

MEASURED PARAMETERS

Monitoring of the following elements:

  • Instant energy consumption.
  • Energy Baseline
  • Energy performance indicators ( per m2, per employee, per customer)
  • Actual consumption of each block (climate, lighting and auxiliaries)
  • Actual power demand.
  • Identify time zones and consumption sections.

DISPOSITIVOS UTILIZADOS

  • Datalogger DL171 with 3 internal electrical measurements
  • SenNet THL-I Temperature, humidity and luminosity probes (x2)
PROBLEM

Triodos Bank is an entity that promotes sustainable and ethical banking, it decided to establish an energy efficiency improvement plan for the company that would serve as an example for its customers.

The initial requirement for the plan was to obtain data to support decision-making. For this purpose, the company required an energy monitoring system, so it contacted Satel Iberia.

SOLUTION

Satel Iberia presented Triodos with a compact solution that could be adapted to its installations. The solution is suitable for both small branches and head offices.

To save space and wiring, it was proposed to use the DL171 datalogger with three integrated electric meters. Temperature, humidity and brightness probes (SenNet THL-IM) were also supplied to control comfort in offices and to provide information on air conditioning operation.

VALUE PROPOSITION

The system supplied not only allows the most relevant consumptions of a bank to be measured (general lighting and climate), but also allows instantaneous consumption to be monitored in real time, the energy baseline to be calculated and energy performance indicators to be calculated (per m2, per employee, per customer, etc.).

In addition, the data captured by the datalogger provides the company with information on the use of the offices according to the hours of operation and the consumption ranges.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Thanks to the permanent monitoring of the offices, the contracted power has been optimized. Specifically, savings of close to 30% have been achieved in this respect.

In addition, the monitoring allows the possible unnecessary consumptions to be detected, as well as contrasted against the electric bill.

Finally, an energy culture has been created within the company and habits and practices in the use of energy have been improved. Specifically, the air conditioning work instructions (which represent 65% of the entity’s energy consumption) have been optimised, adjusting the operation of the equipment to the desired comfort and working hours.

In short, through monitoring, Triodos Bank has saved on its energy bill, while creating an energy culture in the company that sets an example for its customers.
